Liber Pater releases Greek wine
Loïc Pasquet, the man behind Bordeaux's exceptionally pricey Liber Pater brand and a major figure in the Francs de Pied (ungrafted vines) movement, has released the first wine from his Greek enterprise on the island of Naxos.
Dubbed Tetradrachm, the wine is produced from 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres) of Potamissi – an ancient white grape native to Naxos and the Cyclades islands, including Santorini. The vineyard was in an abandoned state on the island prior to its acquisition by Pasquet three years ago.
In keeping with his ethos, the vines are planted on their own, ungrafted, roots and the island is reportedly free from mildew and phylloxera.
The wine is produced in partnership with Greek consultant winemaker Panos Zoumboulis. According to French wine news website Vitisphere.com, the pair have also established a small winemaking facility (of 150 square meters) on the island.
Unsurprisingly (for followers of Pasquet's wines), Tetradrachm has been produced in limited quantities and with a hefty price tag. Just over 1000 bottles have been produced of the inaugural 2021 vintage, boasting a release price of €550 ($579). This will make Tetradrachm the most expensive wine produced in Greece.
Liber Pater – Pasquet's flagship Bordeaux label – retails at an eye-watering €30,000 a bottle.
Despite the wines of Santorini currently riding a major wave of popularity, Pasquet explained that he chose Naxos for its mythological clout.
"It's crazy that everyone is focused on Santorini and Assyrtiko," he said. "While Naxos is the island where [Greek god of wine] Dionysus was born."
